Area M Fishing Report by Evan Wilson
Sand Point had an amazing salmon run–it was unreal to be able
to witness that much fish being caught in one season. It really
helped the community and the elders because of the abundance of
salmon this year.
Some of the old timers told me that it was the most salmon they
have ever seen in a season. Trident roughly processed around 12 to
15 million pounds of salmon this year.
Now moving on: the draggers are all finished up for now. I heard
from some captains that it was very good at the beginning and then
it slowed down later on. The first quota was 32 million pounds of
pollock, and the next one will be 24 million pounds, making a total
of around 85 million pounds of pollock for this year.
The price for pollock was 11 cents. After dragging is all said and
done, a lot of boats will start getting ready to go pot coding. The
quota for pot cod is about 10 million pounds and the price will be
about 27 cents.
