Aleutians East Borough School District – Fights Youth
Tobacco Use
Joins National Kick Butts Day Initiative March 21, 2012
[Sand Point, Alaska] — Young people from Aleutians East Borough School District are
joining thousands of kids across the country who are taking part in Kick Butts Day, a
nationwide initiative that makes kids leaders in the effort to stop youth tobacco use. As
part of the Kick Butts Day celebration, Fighting Against Teen Smoking (F.A.T.S) at Sand
Point School, students are planning several activities for the students and the community
of Sand Point to be involved in Kick-Butts week.
Throughout the year, young advocates take part in a variety of activities to protect kids
from tobacco, including working with elected officials to develop policies that reduce
youth tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke and educating their peers about
tobacco companies’ deceptive marketing practices.
“I choose to have a tobacco free lifestyle because I want to live a long and healthy life
without worrying about the harmful effects that tobacco can do to me,†said Robert Curtis
Jr 18 years old. Also Nikki Mack 17 years old said, “I don’t know if it ‘s just me, but I
think it’s nice being able to breathâ€
In Akutan Alaska, the 8 students and teachers will
be hosting a local health fair for community
members to attend at their school. Akutan School
will have many booths setup displaying a variety of
important issues such as Tobacco, Alcohol, Drugs
and Diabetes. Also in Sand Point, Alaska a village
with the population of 1000 will also be
participating in Kick Butts week. The 15 member
Junior High/ Senior High lead group, ages (13-18)
will be doing a door decorating contest, write
testimonials on why they want to be smoke-free on
a tribute wall, picking up cigarette butts around
town, and putting together letters to local business
and local government offices, to support Sand Point
Alaska in becoming a smoke-free town. Right to left Keith Wilson, Mathew Bravo, Above Jolan Rotter.
On March 21st, elementary, middle and high school students across the country are
organizing Kick Butts Day events to fight youth tobacco use. Young people will
participate in a variety of Kick Butts Day activities such as marching to state capitals and
holding rallies; meeting with elected officials; and holding flash mobs in busy community
spaces. In 2011, thousands of kids carried out hundreds of events. We expect this
number to increase in 2012.
“Kids are a powerful part of the solution to reducing youth tobacco use,†said Matthew L.
Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, which coordinates Kick Butts
Day. “For Kick Butts Day 2012, kids are sending two important messages: they want
the tobacco industry to stop targeting them with advertising and they want elected leaders
at all levels to do more to protect them from tobacco.â€
Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in
the United States, killing more than 400,000 people
every year. Every day, more than 4,000 kids try their first
cigarettes; another 1,000 kids become addicted smokers,
one-third of whom will die prematurely as a result.
The Washington, DC-based Campaign for Tobacco-Free
Kids is one of the largest non-governmental education and advocacy initiatives ever
undertaken to decrease youth tobacco use in the United States. Tobacco-Free Kids strives
to build a healthier future for our children by reducing tobacco use and exposure to
secondhand smoke.

School District, contact George Cromer III @ (907) 383-2393 / gcromer@aebsd.org .

2012 South Alaska Peninsula Area State-Waters Pacific Cod Jig Season Opens March 19th
The Western Gulf of Alaska (WGOA) parallel Pacific cod (P.cod) season will close to jig gear on Saturday, March 17th at 12:00 noon. According to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G), the state-waters P.cod season for vessels using jig gear will open 48 hours later in the South Alaska Peninsula Area on March 19th at 12:00 noon unless delayed by weather. For vessels participating in the WGOA parallel P.cod jig fishery, all P.cod must be delivered prior to participating in the South Alaska Peninsula Area state- waters season.
Jig vessels may not operate more than 5 mechanical jig machines with more than 30 hooks per line. Jig vessels are allocated 15 percent of the total South Alaska Peninsula GHL or 2.3 million pounds.
All vessels participating in the South Alaska Peninsula Area state-waters Pacific cod season may not exceed 58 feet in overall length. Vessel operators must obtain an exclusive state-waters vessel registration from ADF&G prior to participating in the state- waters season.
As a reminder, vessels may not participate in a state-waters P.cod season and any other P.cod season at the same time. Vessels registered for the state-waters season must invalidate their state-waters registration before that vessel may participate in any other P.cod season.
Weather Delay
The state-waters season opening for jig vessels will be delayed for 24 hours if the National Weather Service (NWS) 48-hour marine weather forecast for Area 155 issued at 4 a.m. on March 19th contains gale force wind warnings (35 knots or higher). If the jig gear season opening is delayed and the following day’s 4 a.m. 48-hour forecast again contains gale warnings, the season opening will be delayed an additional 24-hours. Season opening delays may continue on a rolling 24-hour basis for up to seven days beyond the initial opening date. After seven days, the jig season will open regardless of the NWS marine weather forecast for Area 155.
For more information, contact the Alaska Department of Fish & Game in Kodiak at (907) 486-1840. You can also contact in season management staff at the National Marine Fisheries Service at (907) 586-7228 for more information on fishing outside of state waters.

Nome Finish
Time It Right & Welcome Three Mushers
By Joe Runyan
4 AM Wednesday – Nome – A stream of mushers follow in the tracks of 2012 Champ Dallas Seavey, filter into Nome at unconscionable hours. My hotel room phone rings at 4 a.m. and Dave Olson, a good friend of mine and also the 2012 Honorary Musher says, “You better get up, John (Baker, last year’s Champ) is coming in and we can catch Mitch Seavey and Mike Williams, Jr.†It’s a triple play, but it’s also an indicator of the effort required by a dedicated Iditarod fan.
Thinking I have cleverly laid out the right clothes for a comfortable 30 minute survival effort in the finish chute, I quickly finish lacing my sneakers, and throw on a parka. Technically, I’ll be dead if I stay out for longer than 45 minutes , so all is critical as I zip up my park exiting the hotel door. Timing is perfect in the finish chute. Congratulating Mike Williams, shaking hands with his dad Mike Williams, Sr. it seems my game plan is on. I really enjoyed the quiet dignity of Mike Williams, Jr. when I had the opportunity to talk to him in White Mountain. He was feeding his dogs chunks of whale blubber and explained to me how he fed it, noting that his dogs had acquired a demanding taste for it. Mik e had gradually moved himself in the top ten, and it seemed that he had a sure lock on the top ten. 77 miles later, he is in 8th place, a wonderful accomplishment and a tribute to his steady strategy and his obvious affection for his dogs.
