Aleutians East Borough Election Write Up!
The Election results are in across the Aleutians East Borough and while many of the elections are settled, one is still too close to call.
The position of mayor for Aleutians East Borough shows Alvin Osterback in the lead by a narrow 12 votes, with 76 absentee ballots still to be counted.
Other races still up for grabs with the absentee count include:
Borough Assembly Seat F where Josy Shangin leads Bill Dushkin by 42 votes, and School District seat D, which shows Jacki Brandell in the lead of Arlene Gundersen by 45 votes.
All incumbents for the various city councils ran unopposed and retain their seats, and the Mayoral race in Sand Point currently has Glen Gardner ahead of the nearest candidate by 47 votes. 60 ballots still remain to be counted for the City of Sand Point before that race becomes final.
The City of Sand Point had a 53% voter turnout for the election, based on the 473 eligible voters. Compare that to the 58% that voted in the most recent Presidental election between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton.
All the election numbers can be seen at our website, www.apradio.org
On 09/29/2017, Anchorage WAANT was monitoring the Anchorage to Sand Point flight in response to a tip received from Sand Point Police Department when they observed an unrelated traveler at the ticket counter exhibiting drug trafficking behavior. Anchorage WAANT began an investigation into this passenger and ultimately identified him as Christian Anderson-Nutt (age 21) of Sand Point.Â
During the investigation, Department of Corrections Officer Wood and K-9 “Koda†were requested to assist and responded to the airport. Subsequent to the K-9 sniff and search of Anderson-Nutt and his baggage, 52.3 grams of methamphetamine, 19.8 grams of heroin, and $6,570.00 in US Currency were seized. The amount of heroin and methamphetamine seized represents approximately 198, and 523 user doses respectively. Therefore, the value of the seized narcotics had they reached Sand Point, a community of roughly 1000 people, is approximately $72,100. Anderson-Nutt was arrested on multiple charges of MICS 2nd Degree and was remanded at the Anchorage Correctional Complex. Anderson-Nutt was already on conditions of release on a pending MICS 4 case and his bail was set at $ 5,000 performance and $5,000.00 appearance bonds.
We sat down with the 4 Candidates for Mayor of Sand Point. We asked them 5 questions:
1. What inspired you to run for mayor?
2. What are Sand Points biggest needs?
3. How would you help prepare Sand Point for the future?
4. What is Sand Points biggest strength?
5. What issue do you believe isn’t getting enough attention from the City?
