The U. S. Fish and Wildlife is allowing for a permitted hunt of 20 caribou on Unit 9 D. By consensus of a meeting of the communities of Cold Bay, False Pass, King Cove, Nelson Lagoon, Sand Point each community will be allowed 4 caribou. The Qagan Tayagungin Tribe is coordinating a lottery for the Community of Sand Point’s 4 Permits. Anyone wishing to enter the lottery please contact the Qagan Tayagungin office at 907-383-5616 or QTTAdmin@arctic.net.
Entries must be received by 9:00 AM, July 26th!
All residents of Sand Point are eligible to enter this lottery. Individuals must be a resident of Alaska for minimum 1 year, and a resident of Sand Point for 30 days. Per our discussion at the meeting, we are asking that people who harvest a caribou share with some of the elders in the community.
After hearing rumors that PenAir’s 135 certification could lapse, resulting in a loss of service to some of the communities within the Aleutians East Borough, the Borough placed a call to PenAir. The airline provided the following statement:
According to PenAir President Danny Seybert, PenAir intends to maintain its 135 certification, but is considering readjusting its schedule with reduced travel to communities such as False Pass, Nelson Lagoon and King Cove because of a decline in passenger service.

Sand Point Commercial Salmon Fishery Announcement # 14 For Emergency Order #4-FS-M-SP-16-12
Commercial salmon fishing will be allowed in the South Central Districts and the Shumagin Islands portion of the Southeastern District for 24 hours from 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 17 until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012.
Commercial salmon fishing will also be allowed in the Beaver Bay, Balboa Bay, Southwest Stepovak, Stepovak Flats, and East Stepovak sections of the Southeastern District for approximately 36 hours from noon Tuesday, July 17 through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012.
In addition, the Northwest Stepovak section will open to commercial salmon fishing for 48 hours from noon Tuesday, July 17 until noon Thursday, July 19, 2012. The closed waters of Orzinski Bay will be extended to the 1,000 yard markers.
All closed waters in the above locations will be as described in the regulation book or as adjusted by emergency order.
